MANDATORY Mission Trip Participant Equipment Orientation

Sunday, April 22nd, 2:00 – 6:00 p.m.

If you plan to go on this year’s Mission Trip, join us for an equipment orientation afternoon. During the process of making gifts for our residents, Mission Trip adults will teach participants the proper way to hold and use tools as well as important safety information. Power tools may be part of this training. This is a team building experience and light refreshments will be served. We will meet in the Karin Johnson Hall. By filling out this form we are assuming you are 100% ready and available to go on our trip!  It includes emergency contacts and basic questions about skills you know.

Who Can Go?

St. John youth currently in 9th grade - 20 yrs old. If you will be 21 by the time the Mission Trip begins, please contact Pastor Jen before signing up. If you have a friend that would like to go, please contact Pastor Jen before signing them up. 

Destination: Parsons, Kansas, the "Prairie Hope Workcamp"

Parsons was founded in 1870 to be the headquarters of the Kansas Missouri Texas Railroad, better known as the “Katy Railroad.” During and after World War II, it was home to a plant that supplied ammunition to our armed forces. But the sale of the railroad in the late 1980s led to the loss of jobs and broke a link to the city’s history. The military tried to close the ammunition plant in 2005, though today it still operates in a limited capacity. Today almost 15% of the population lives below the poverty line.

How We'll Serve

Our group can expect to bring new life to aging homes through interior and exterior painting as well as other light carpentry projects, including construction of porches and wheelchair ramps. Our group will stay in a modern school facility with tons of showers—private for the girls—a huge cafeteria, and air-conditioning throughout.

Cost

The cost for this trip is $375, plus money for meals on the road. You can reserve your spot by signing up by May 1st. A $50 deposit non-refundable deposit holds your spot. Scholarships are available- please contact Pastor Jen.

- Mark off the week on your calendar, as participants must attend the entire trip: July 7 - July 14, 2018

- All communication with youth participants will be through the parents: please check your email and forward information to your son/daughter as needed. 

- Please mark your calendar- we have a Mandatory Orientation meeting on Thursday, May 3rd at 7pm. 

EVEN IF YOU'VE ATTENDED A MISSION TRIP BEFORE, YOU NEED TO COME TO THE ORIENTATION.

- A deposit (check or cash) in the amount of $50 will secure your spot. 

- Checks can be written to St. John Lutheran Church, and write "Youth Mission Trip 2018" in the memo line; drop off deposits in our church office. Scholarships available, contact Pastor Jen for details.
